An Annual Affair

Raising more than racquets

Raise a Racquet is a long-running event to support the UNC Children’s Hospital. In 2017, Raise a Racquet established a specially designated fund at UNC Children’s to assist families with critical, unmet expenses during the time their child undergoes treatment. The Farm Fund is a lifeline for many families and patients, and in the most recent fiscal year, the Farm Fund supported more than 200 families by helping pay critical expenses such as food, transportation, rent, mortgage payments, utilities and more.

Having a child in the hospital creates many new stresses on a family. In addition to the anxiety that comes from having a sick child, unexpected logistical and financial challenges often arise, making it difficult for the patient and his/her family to focus on getting well.

Imagine having to choose between working to support your family and being with your child in the hospital. Sometimes the expense of traveling from home to UNC Children’s is too great for a family to bear, and their child must remain in care at UNC alone. Sometimes families must decide if they will pay the utility bill at home or pay for lodging in Chapel Hill to be near a sick child.

The Farm Fund strives to provide a small bit of relief to patients and their families, offering aid to those at UNC Children’s who require significant financial, emotional and psycho-social support and assistance. The Fund will help cover expenses such as food, transportation, accommodations, travel, rent, utility bills, home and automobile repairs, education expenses, telephone bills, and other day-to- day costs.

Join the Raise A Racquet effort today by making a donation. Your contribution makes a big difference!
